Covestro launches global clone at CHINAPLAS 2024 International Rubber and Plastic Exhibition ® RP Polycarbonate, this series of products is produced based on the mass balance method and includes a share of post consumer chemical recycling raw materials. The joint solution is an important means for Covestro to achieve a circular economy. The development and supply of related raw materials for this polycarbonate series are jointly completed by Covestro, suppliers Neste and Borealis from Finland.

Covestro will collaborate with automotive brand manufacturers to develop market applications and mass produce high-purity polycarbonate, which means that Covestro will begin supplying transparent polycarbonate containing chemically recycled raw materials to the automotive market.

The new series enriches our existing sustainable polycarbonate product portfolio, which is another milestone in Covestro's commitment to circular economy. We are excited about this, "said Wang Li, Global President of Covestro's Engineering Plastics Division." We are working together with partners to help save fossil resources and give waste a second life. By providing materials that meet extremely high purity standards, we can also help customers achieve their sustainable development goals.

The recycling and reuse of raw materials is the trend
Currently, more and more industries require products to contain a certain proportion of recycled raw materials to comply with upcoming regulatory policies and voluntary environmental initiatives, including the EU's new directive on end-of-life vehicles (ELV) and relevant standards in the US Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT). The performance of RP series polycarbonate is no different from that of fossil based products, and it is a member of the Circular Intelligence (CQ) cycle solution of Covestro (CQ) (used to identify products containing at least 25% alternative raw materials). At some specific production sites, including Covestro's Krefeld J ü ttingen base in Germany, this new plastic series is entirely produced using renewable electricity.
Jeroen Verhoeven, Vice President of Value Chain Development for Nister Polymers and Chemicals, said, "By relying on chemical recycling processes, we can provide recycled materials that meet the most demanding application needs, helping customers in various industries achieve their recycling goals. We are pleased to see that Covestro has put this into practice
Nordic Chemicals is delighted to support Covestro in this important project by providing reliable and sustainable solutions, "said Thomas Van De Velde, Senior Vice President of Basic Chemicals at Nordic Chemicals." This demonstrates the importance of value chain collaboration in endowing waste with new value

In addition to the automotive industry, Covestro also hopes to expand the application of RP series new products to key fields such as electronics, electrical and medical health, and provide polycarbonate containing chemically recycled raw materials for various high-performance and durable products. Thanks to mature physical recycling technology and continuously improving chemical recycling technology, these plastics are expected to have a "third life" after a long service life.
Covestro's sustainable polycarbonate product portfolio also includes other product lines, such as physical recycling clones ® R Series and clones containing recycled biomass raw materials ® RE The latter is produced based on the quality balance method and certified by authoritative institutions. The RE series currently includes specifications containing a 25% share of renewable raw materials.
